Tutorial with Liz
It is becoming increasingly apparent that my use of materials and colours draws a line of taste, it is either to your taste or not, I don't know if this is problematic or integral to the way the work functions, i think probably the latter. People either have a strong negative reaction to the material or a strong positive reaction, I think that this is because my work tries to exemplify a certain style that I see as representative of a specific online culture on tumblr. I'm interested in the contradiction of wanting to eat something that cannot be eaten, consumerism as a literal bodily function, and the way that the materials and colours make you want to eat them even though they don't exist in nature, candy colours are unrealistic. Wanting to touch and eat the work is important in its sensory seduction, this could be seen as a barrier to deeper readings of the work because it becomes a superficial experience of aesthetic as seduction but perhaps it is that uncomfortable situation that I am interested, art now is very anti seduction for good reason, because advertising and the mechanisms of consumerism have such barbaric and horrifying consequences and connotations, but what else is there in art, is this pretence to something other than aesthetic seduction in itself bogus?I think that I'm going down a route of formalism that I want to get through, I want to purify the vision somehow to overcome it because this doesn't have to be what my work it. People have different reactions to the cgi work as well, moniker thought it could be shown with the painting I did in first year, dave felt that it was the use of materials that was most important, martin westward thought it was just research for a film of object and liz seems to think it is much more interesting than my other work, maybe it has become more interesting as I have developed it. I could take some time to focus on the cgi stuff because I haven't done that since the beginning of first year and it would be nice to come back to it in an in depth way, I feel like I know where the sculptural work is going and I'm not sure I want to take it there yet. But there is also this idea of integrating the sculpture with the cgi and this somehow involving the construction of a sculpture around the screen which is something I've been meaning to do and something which might be really fun.
